Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The broader security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport usage to discussions practices.
