The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the complete message from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our audience.
The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.
The President
Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the competition with fresh skills, risks, and tests that shift every round. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, put it on the line, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced release date or consoles, but players can anticipate additional details as creation advances.
